The Massachusetts Climate Action Network (MCAN) is a 20-year-old statewide 501(c)3 organization that empowers local advocates to lead climate policy initiatives and actions.
Position Overview
MCAN seeks a contractor to serve as the MCAN Program and Advocacy Director for Embodied Carbon to continue our energy and environmental justice efforts. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this position will spearhead our initiatives to reduce embodied carbon in buildings while promoting environmental justice.
The contract covers work to be completed by the end of 2025 at a price not exceeding $45,000.
- Expand awareness among advocates, local officials, state officials, and reporters about the importance of reducing embodied carbon as part of a holistic approach to building decarbonization
- Accelerate advocacy efforts to advance local and statewide solutions that reduce embodied carbon
- Increase the constituencies in the conversation around embodied carbon by engaging with private sector actors, organized labor, and experts working to advance equitable workforce development
Key Responsibilities
- Lead MCAN's campaign to reduce embodied carbon and advocate for healthy, climate-resilient buildings, with a particular focus on environmental justice communities
- Represent MCAN's embodied carbon initiatives in coalition spaces
- Drive legislative advocacy efforts related to embodied carbon
- Center equity in campaigns and clean energy work
- Develop and maintain relationships with advocates, partner organizations, state agencies, and municipal light boards
- Support community-driven efforts to measure and reduce embodied carbon
- Coordinate with stakeholders across the building and energy sectors
Desired Qualifications
- Four-year degree in energy, building science, or related field; or equivalent professional experience
- Working knowledge of embodied carbon and building science
- Experience in grassroots and community organizing
- Strong analytical and organizational abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Project coordination experience
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Nationbuilder
- Understanding of climate justice, energy justice, and energy democracy issues in New England
- Knowledge of advanced building codes, strategic municipal procurement, regional grid operations, and MA legislative processes
- Familiarity with building energy modeling and carbon calculation tools
- Demonstrated ability to address equity issues within campaigns
- Strong track record of successful project management
