Position Overview:
The Director of Finance is an operational leader responsible for overseeing the organization’s financial operations, ensuring fiscal accountability, and contributing to the organization’s strategic growth. Reporting directly to the COO, this role combines team leadership with proactive and detail-oriented systems thinking. This is an exciting opportunity for a finance professional with a passion and talent for collaboration and people management.
Essential Functions:
Financial Management
- Manage day-to-day financial functions, including accounts payable/receivable, audits, and tax preparation, ensuring accurate and efficient processes
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, projections and reports (annual, quarterly, and monthly) to internal and external stakeholders, including board of directors and finance committee
- Oversee the annual audit process and ensure compliance with GAAP, form 990 preparation, and other relevant accounting standards
- Develop and manage the annual budgeting process for individual sites and the overall organization, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities
- Oversee the use of SAGE Intacct and other financial systems to ensure operational effectiveness
- Collaborate with staff to improve financial systems and processes from the ground up, ensuring scalability and efficiency
- Manage grant tracking processes for various funding sources, including government, corporate and foundation grants
Financial Planning and Analysis
- Develop and maintain financial models to support long term strategic decision making
- Analyze program delivery costs and identify opportunities for cost optimization
- Monitor cash flow and develop strategies to ensure financial sustainability
Systems and Controls
- Develop, implement, and maintain financial policies, standard operating procedures, and internal controls to safeguard organizational resources.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
- Evaluate and recommend new accounting software and systems, as needed, to optimize financial operations
Team Leadership and Collaboration
- Lead and mentor the finance team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, high performance and accountability
- Ensure COO, CDO and Regional Directors have information necessary to manage revenue and expenses at national and site level
Required Experience and Qualifications:
- 3+ years experience in financial management
- Proven ability to lead and manage financial operations in a dynamic, multi-site organization
- Excellent interpersonal and team building skills, with experience in staff development
- Experience with SAGE Intacct and other enterprise accounting software
- Understanding of nonprofit financial principles, including compliance with GAAP and IRS regulations
- Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, and risk management
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a strong emphasis on cultural competency and the ability to effectively communicate across diverse cultural backgrounds
- Flexible, adaptable, and well-organized, with a demonstrated capacity to navigate cross-cultural environments and foster inclusive spaces
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration or related field
- Professional certification such as CPA, CFA, or CMA
