About the Case Method Institute

The Case Method Institute for Education and Democracy (originally the Case Method Project at Harvard Business School) is an independent nonprofit organization based in Cambridge, MA, dedicated to improving high school history and civics education in the United States. Under the leadership of Professor David Moss, the Institute works with high school teachers nationwide to bring the signature teaching approach of many leading professional schools—the case method—to U.S. history, government, and civics classrooms, enabling high school students to train for active citizenship in the same way professional school students train for leadership in business and law. The Institute provides teachers with professional development in case method teaching, access to cases and teaching materials originally developed for Professor Moss’s Harvard College course, “History of American Democracy,” and ongoing, personalized support—all free of charge. Rigorous program evaluation indicates highly positive effects on students’ academic performance (including their critical thinking skills and ability to make effective, evidence-based arguments) as well as on their levels of civic interest, knowledge, and engagement. To date, the initiative has partnered with over 2,500 high school teachers who in turn have brought the case method to more than a quarter-million students in all 50 states and D.C. The Institute is now significantly expanding operations to scale its reach and impact nationwide.

Position Summary & Qualifications

The Outreach & Growth Manager/Director (title based on experience) will play a vital role in refining and executing the Institute’s growth strategy. Ultimately, the Institute seeks to reach a critical mass of active partner teachers such that every high school social studies teacher is aware of, and has the ability to choose, the case method for history and civics instruction. The Outreach & Growth Manager/Director will thoroughly understand and embrace the scaling targets of the Institute and will develop and implement a corresponding plan to maximize the recruitment of teachers who will complete the Institute’s PD program, try the case method with their students, and ultimately adopt the case method as a core component of their teaching. The ideal candidate would have the ability to build relationships with teachers and school administrators, to promote an evidence-based pedagogy to the Institute’s target audience, and to continually innovate and experiment with new ways to scale the program. The ideal candidate will also have a deep commitment to strengthening high school social studies education in a wholly nonpartisan environment, excellent writing and interpersonal skills, and a comfort working within a nimble, growing organization.

Core responsibilities of the role include shaping and implementing a multi-layered teacher-recruitment strategy, using data and analysis to forecast and report on teacher-recruiting campaigns, developing and sustaining relationships with school administrators and professional organizations, and maintaining excellence and uniformity in organizational messaging and branding. This hire will also work to enhance the functionality, SEO, and user experience of the Institute’s website and will play a lead role in selecting and managing vendors involved with the Institute’s outreach and communications activities.

The salary range listed ($70k-$110k) pertains to both the manager-level role, at the lower end, and the director-level role, at the higher end. Salary will be set commensurate with experience and title.
