Mission:

Income Movement is a national non-profit organization working to move basic income from a radical idea to widespread public acceptance and organize the movement needed to gain a national program in the next decade. We are based in Portland, OR.

Background:

Basic income is rooted in the belief that human beings deserve to have their basic needs met, and that giving people unrestricted, direct cash every month is the best way to ensure we have a system that accomplishes this. Monthly basic income would create an income floor for everyone to stand upon, so that no one is left behind, whether they are working or not. Unrestricted cash is a step towards a “dignity economy,” where each of us is trusted and empowered to decide what’s best for ourselves and our families. When people have their basic needs met, they can go beyond merely surviving and begin thriving.

Since 2020, Income Movement has been a leader in building the movement for a federal basic income. Like many movements for meaningful social change, this is a marathon, not a sprint. To better understand our trajectory, we’ve created a roadmap of where the movement has been, where it is, and where we’re going.

Our three pillars of support are:

Grassroots Organizing: We must organize the most passionate basic income supporters to help lead this movement at the local, regional and national levels. Creating a strategic roadmap with targeted initiatives provides opportunities for people to work towards larger goals by taking action to promote basic income, while intentionally rooting the work in the experiences of everyday people, and demonstrating this publicly.
Thought Leadership and Coalition Building: Critical work includes convening social justice and basic income organizations, and bringing together experts and influencers to guide the larger movement towards strategic outcomes. Together, we identify key language and tools for educating the public on basic income, develop a shared roadmap, and coordinate across initiatives and events to maximize impact.

Political Impact: Fundamental to our movement is establishing basic income as a legitimate political issue – we do so by defining the support base and highlighting its importance to voters. We track direct cash programs and basic income legislation and connect grassroots and organizations to opportunities to advocate and persuade those in power to adopt pro-basic income stances.

Position Description:

This is a full time, hybrid position based in Portland, OR. Reimbursement for relocation costs are available.

Income Movement seeks a Development Coordinator for a full time, in-person position, to assist the President in building a sustainable development and fundraising program that meets the ambitious goals of the organization. The ideal candidate has experience with grant-writing, foundation-based fundraising, donor relations, and strategic operations. This person is organized, thoughtful, creative, collaborative, possesses a high degree of professionalism and an ability to work with a variety of diverse stakeholders.

We are looking to expand the Income Movement team with someone who can help us elevate the organization’s fundraising efforts. This is a new position with the opportunity to grow and evolve. Working with the organization’s President, the Development Coordinator will support existing development processes, tools, and systems to support building a culture of philanthropy. This person will be responsible for supporting Income Movement’s overall fundraising efforts, including but not limited to: researching funding opportunities, writing grants, maintaining tracking systems, cultivating new prospects (spanning individual donors, foundations, and corporations), managing donor communications, and assisting with the implementation of the overall development strategies.

With a focus on securing funding and growing the donor base for the organization, the Development Coordinator will play a key role in assisting the President in executing fundraising plans and ensuring smooth development operations.

Responsibilities & Tasks:

Write Letters of Inquiry, grants, and funding proposals to prospective and existing individual donors, foundations, and companies.
Support effective approaches to individual giving and customized strategies that maintain and enhance relationships with current individual donors/supporters, including the writing of quarterly update emails and newsletters, compiling annual reports and more.
Conduct targeted prospecting for new funding opportunities from foundations and corporations.
Prepare research, briefings, and other materials as needed for conversations and communications with funders
Partner with the President and Communications Coordinator to support fundraising communications and marketing to increase the organization’s visibility and impact.
Maintain records and submit reports related to grant opportunities.
Oversee all aspects of the donor tracking system, including gift entry, donor acknowledgements, personal thank you notes, reconciliation, and reporting.

Job Qualifications:

A passion for and commitment to Income Movement’s mission and vision.
3-5 years of of grant writing experience, with proven track record of success
Experience working on a high-performing development team; knowledge of prospect research and donor engagement processes and best practices.
Bachelor’s degree, or at least four years of work experience within nonprofit administration, grant writing, or fundraising roles.
Highly organized, thorough, and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
A healthy relationship with excel spreadsheets, data entry and analysis. Proficiency in data management and reporting.
A collaborative, self-starter and problem solver with the ability to take initiative and work independently.
Possesses a sense of humor and can adapt to the needs of different environments.

Income Movement is currently funded with the generous support of foundations and individual major donors. We are looking to expand these programs and build a sustainable fundraising program.
