The California-Pacific Conference is a regional body of The United Methodist Church, made up of some 50,000 members in almost 350 local churches throughout Southern California, parts of Central California, Hawaii, the Pacific Islands, and Guam.

The California-Pacific Conference of the United Methodist Church, a 501( c)(3) nonprofit corporation, seeks a Controller to be responsible for organizing and supervising all fiscal controls in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and internal policies and procedures.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Controller

LOCATION: Conference Headquarters, Pasadena CA

While some remote flexibility may be available, this position primarily requires an onsite presence at our Pasadena office.

Supervised by: Chief Financial and Benefits Officer

Supervision responsibility for: Designated staff

Position Overview:

Organizes and supervises all fiscal controls in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and internal policies and procedures, including budgeting, audits, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger and financial reporting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Manage all aspects of the organization’s financial operations including budgeting, financial planning, payroll, and reporting.
Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, reports, and analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
Stay informed about relevant accounting standards and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations governing nonprofit organizations.
Prepare and submit necessary financial reports to regulatory bodies, funding agencies and the general church.
Ensure compliance with grant requirements pertaining to financial obligations and bring to the attention of the Director responsible for the grant.
Coordinate and facilitate annual financial audits, working closely with external auditors to ensure a smooth and efficient audit process.
Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard the organization's assets and maintain the integrity of financial data.
Gather data from department heads for development of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
Monitor and analyze budget-to-actual variances, providing regular updates to leadership.
Identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiency improvements.
Oversee and provide backup for the payroll process.
Manage staff responsible for accounting and payroll activities
Design and manage all software applications and processes related to accounting and payroll functions in collaboration with the Chief Financial and Benefits Officer.
Issue credit cards to staff members.
Design special reports in the accounting system.
Provide resources to local churches regarding financial matters.

SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities, and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Experience implementing new financial software preferred.
Experience with Ministry Brands/Shelby accounting systems preferred.
Comprehensive knowledge of non-profit governance, management, accounting, financial planning, and business processes.
Working knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Ability to analyze problems, think creatively, and develop innovative solutions that align with organizational goals.
Proficient in using accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.

EDUCATION AND DXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field is required (e.g., Finance, Accounting, HR etc.). Advanced degree preferred.
CPA required.
Seven to ten years’ experience in a senior-level finance or accounting position required.
Three to five years of experience in fund accounting is required.
Three to five years of supervisory experience is required.
